What is Shared Hosting?
Shared hosting is all about sharing resources with hundreds of users and so you will be prone to slow down in site speed when one or more sites uses more than its share of resources.
What is VPS?
VPS or Virtual Private Server are server space that have specific resources just for your site which is more generous than normal shared hosting and your site is managed by you only. The fact is you still sharing a big server farm space however this time you have specific resources just for your site. And a lot of you will panic and say, “But I do not know how to manage my server!” and that is ok. The technical thingy are mostly just one click install and then logging in to the server and issue a few commands that could be copied from the manual or guide. After doing it a few times, This task will become easier than you can imagine.
What is Cloudways? and how is it different from VPS?
Of cause you can use Cloudways and let the Cloudways teams to do those server maintainance work but you have to pay a bit more for their effort.
For example if you use a droplet which is USD$5, the same droplet would be usd$10 in Cloudways. The resource you have is exactly the same.
How to setup a VPS like a shared hosting?
Now you could be thinking what if I could be thinking about setting a VPS and let it run with a Cpanel so that it is like a Shared hosting account with all the specific resources. Yes you could do that and be the server admin yourself with software and the software is called Cyberpanel.
Step 1: Click the following link to create a Digitalocean Droplet or VPS
Step 2: When you “Choose an image” click marketplace and Search for “CyberPanel”.
Step 3: Choose a plan, go with Basic and $5 per month.
Most small to mid sized business site are okay with the $5 plan until you gain more traffic.
Step 4: Choose Data Centre region
Please Choose a data center near to where most of your customer is, so if you are me its Singapore. If your customer is in the US then you can choose New York or San francisco etc.
Step 5: * Select additional option choose to click monitoring
This step is to help you check your bandwidth useage so that you know when to ask for more resources.
Step 6: Authentication : choose SSH or Password?
Most of the case choose password for convenience, and choose a Strong password that you can remember with mix of upper and lower cases and numbers.
* if you forgot your password, just reset your droplet to set a new password.
The best case is actually to set a SSH and this method need you to link the new droplet to your computer/laptop hardware. (So you cannot login to droplet if you do not have the hardware!) Its more secure but its very hardware dependance.
Step 7: Click Create and your Droplet will be created in minutes.
Step 8: login to your droplet/VPS via password/SSH and verify server and the VPS will start running
*When you click and create a droplet via my referrer link, you will get $100 credit for 60 days to try Digital ocean VPS/droplet. If you have any problem, feel free to email me at mrtan.sg@gmail.com. Thank you.
